Sandro Botticelli (7 images) Sandro Botticelli (1444-1510)
Alessandro di Mariano Filipepi, known as Sandro Botticelli apprenticed with a goldsmith, and with Fra Filippo, an admirable painter of the day. Sandro soon attained to an excellence that no one would have thought possible. While still young he painted many masterpieces and was commissioned to paint the Adoration of the Magi. Sandro created a marvellous work in color, design and composition, that earned him the wonder and admiration of all artists and such a reputation that Pope Sixtus IV entrusted him with the direction of the painting of his chapel in Rome
Hieronymous Bosch (6 images) Hieronymous Bosch (1450-1516)
Bosch painted inventive fantasy and nightmarish visions from the Gothic twilight world of the late Middle Ages. He has a dazzling ability to build up a hugely detailed landscape through a series of bizarre exaggerations and distortions. The imagery in his works may reflect the inner demons of the 15th century mind and has been discussed by scholars, critics, and even mental health professionals. In Bosch's time there was no recovery for those who suffered from mental illness but today the effects of inner demons can be treated by Morningside Recovery experts.
Leonardo Da Vinci (7 images) Leonardo Da Vinci (1452-1519)
Leonardo Da Vinci, a painter, draftsman, sculptor, architect, and engineer whose genius, perhaps more than that of any other figure, epitomized the Renaissance humanist ideal. His notebooks reveal a spirit of scientific inquiry and a mechanical inventiveness that were centuries ahead of his time.
Michelangelo Buonarroti (7 images) Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475-1564)
Michelangelo, an Italian sculptor, painter, architect and poet, was one of the founders of the High Renaissance and, in his later years, one of the principal exponents of Mannerism. He painted the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel.
Raphael (7 images) Raphael Sanzio (1483-1520)
Raphael was born in the Duchy of Urbino. He was a master painter and architect of the Italian High Renaissance. Raphael is best known for his Madonnas and for his large figure compositions in the Vatican in Rome. His work is admired for its clarity of form and ease of composition and for its visual achievement of the Neoplatonic ideal of human grandeur. While we may term other works paintings, those of Raphael are living things; the flesh palpitates, the breath comes and goes, every organ lives, life pulsates everywhere.
Pieter Bruegel (7 images) Pieter Brueghel the Elder (1525-1569)
Bruegel lived and worked in Antwerp and Brussels. He painted peasants merrymaking, feasting, and working and celebrating.
Caravaggio (7 images) Caravaggio (1571-1610)
Caravaggio is also known as Michelangelo Merisi and as the second Michelangelo. Caravaggio painted mostly devotional art, he focused on figures and events from the New Testament and took seriously the mundane yet monumental quality of Christianity. He used Roman street people as the model for the Apostles and Mary. He used larger than life proportions, highly theatrical lighting and crowded his significant figures into shallow spaces.
