Leslie Lewis

Biography: From an interest in art developed through after-school work in a local museum and two years in northern Italy (military), I attended the University of Illinois School of Art & Design, leaving with a BFA in painting and printmaking. I studied under Edward Betts, Douglas Hilson, Eugenio Tellez and Enrique Castro-Cid, and developed a strong interest in geometric abstraction and its potential for intuitive conversations between artist and viewer, based on strong color and space interactions. My work at the time consisted of large (5' x 6' to 6' x 12') oil, alkyd and acrylic shaped paintings in groups, and in color etchings and silkscreens. In recent years my work has been on a smaller scale, rather than groups of large shaped canvases (more to come, however). During the late sixties and early seventies I showed in several group exhibitions, including the Boston Printmakers 1968 show at the Museum of Fine Arts, and regional mid-western shows (University of Illinois and Beloit College). I presently am a member and show with the Cambridge Art Association, Cambridge, MA and have an upcoming solo exhibit at the Bromfiedl gallery, Boston. I have returned to painting after a long hiatus (to raise a family), and to find that no matter what else one does, the need to paint remains strong. My recent work explores two seemingly disparate approaches, the use of balanced geometric compositional elements allied with intense color to create spatial ambiguities and visual excitement, and the use of an almost color-field approach to landscape to provide a feeling of visual space, time and atmosphere. I typically do about two paintings a month in acrylic and several smaller studies in gouache, and will soon be editioning several color etchings.
