J. W. Gardner

Biography: J. W. Gardner is a Virginia native and a graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University with a BFA in Painting and Printmaking. He is also an alumnus of the University of Maryland (UMBC) Graduate Program in Historical Studies. His new work combines the sensibilities of his long experience as a figurative painter with his love of American history and of Southern Cultural history particularly. Gardner’s current work places the figure in the historical environment of the Depression era South. These medium sized oil paintings are executed in the immediate, direct, painterly manner characteristic of the artist’s work for many years. They represent a carefully crafted combination of period imagery, atmosphere and thick aggressive paint.
