Garry Andrews

Biography: Garry Andrews is a multi award winning, accomplished artist and qualified trainer whose background includes community cultural development. He has held over sixty solo and curated group exhibitions and is known for his murals commissioned for corporate sector and government departments such as the ABC Greentrain Mural, Mural for the Cairns Regional Gallery, Murals for Cairns Port Authority, Brisbane City Council (with Sandgate High School) and educational murals for Department of Environment, Cardwell Qld. He is a practising artist with a Masters Degree in Visual Arts from Griffith University, Diploma of Arts Fine Art (Tafe), Cert IV Small Business Management and Cert IV Training and Assessment. His art is included in many prestigious collections including Australian National Gallery, Griffith University, James Cook University, Optus Vision, Transfield, Faber-Castell International Collection, Caltex, JADA-Grafton Regional Gallery, Perc Tucker Regional Gallery and Cairns City Collection. Garry has taught for TAFE-Cairns, Townsville, Gateway, MSIT, and Flying Arts inc., and delivered training and assessment in Certificate and Diploma courses in Photoimaging, Graphic Design and Customer Contact for private registered training organisations. His community involvement includes establishing the highly successful KICKARTS inc. (now Kickarts Contemporary Arts)where he was the key stakeholder and foundation chairman. He was instrumental in establishing art courses with Cairns Tafe, (ATSI, TNQIT),among whose first graduate students included Jenauwarrie and Vernon Ah Kee who recently represented Australia at the Venice Biennale. Garry has facilitated many specialised art workshops for secondary schools and private colleges and is recognised for his mentoring capability. He toured central Queensland and delivered a series of arts workshops for Flying Arts inc. and the annual art residential school VAEW (Flying Arts) held at QUT Kelvin Grove Campus. He has served on management committees including Kickarts (Founding Chairman), ATSI, TNQIT Curriculum Committee and Cairns Regional Gallery Advisory Committee. Garry's art is primarily expressionistic and includes figurative and abstract imagery as well as interpretations of landscape.His preferred mediums are large oil and acrylic paintings on canvas, printmaking-etchings and monotypes, and photography.
