Daryl G. Colburn
 | Biography:
Daryl G. Colburn, non-ferrous metal sculptor, has been working with copper, bronze and silver throughout his professional
career which began in 1975. His unique ability in making the metal come to life whether he is portraying Native Americans,
the Southwest, nudes or abstractions has caused much acclaim. His technique is a combination of fusion, patinas, overlays, brazing and soldering. Using an oxygen acetylene torch, hands and hammer, Colburn yields his one of a kind sculptures.
Daryl was born December 5, 1953 in San Francisco, California. He began his career as a professional artist 24 years ago in
Kerrville, Texas. There he owned and operated two galleries, "Woodfire Gallery" from 1977-83 and "Potlatch Gallery" from
1983-87. He then moved to Austin, Texas and began doing juried arts shows and numerous one artist shows. In 1988 he began "Sunset Studios and Gallery" in Austin and in 1989 he opened "Colburn/Winters Studio" in Ranchos de Taos, New Mexico.
Currently Daryl G. Colburn is owner of Laughing at the Sun fine art gallery in Austin, Texas, and works from
'Studio Hí located near the gallery.1999 has been a busy year for Daryl. Having successfully advertised in Southwest
Art magazine and Native Peoples for seven years, Daryl created another piece, advertised in the August 1999 issue of Southwest Art , "My Fathers Song," a limited edition of 15.
It is clear that the Native American influences in Darylís life have inspired him to create pre-1800 pieces that are intricately detailed yet powerful and full of motion at the same time. Having worked successfully for 18 years on all different types of Native American pieces Daryl continues to create a select few pieces.
Both Daryl G. Colburn and his work have been credited with having spiritual, healing and visionary qualities. The emotional impact
of Colburnís work is its essence, whether it is joy or a Shamanís trance the viewer is moved to react to the communicated message in laughter or in awe. Colburn says "In my work I try to capture feelings. Maybe not always in the form which we see things, but I try to communicate what I feel and why I am here. Reality to me is beyond the eye, into the heart".
He is an inventor, fusing different metals, grinding them down to create intricate webs of copper inlaid in bronze and discovering new patinas.
