Arnold Chao
 | Biography: Arnold Chao studied art throughout his education at the University of California, Santa Cruz. There, he was afforded the opportunity to experiment with sculpting, drawing, photography, and painting in various mediums. One of his greatest influences during this time was Professor Eduardo Carillo who encouraged him to explore his unique style. Arnold received his BFA and BA in Psychology from UCSC in 1996. Since his graduation, Arnold has never stopped practicing his artistic vision. Using his garage as a makeshift studio and teaching facility, when the occasion calls for it, Chao always has a piece in progress. Arnold's artistic goal is to construct imagery beyond the usual scope of perception while preserving a sense of the universal beauty of nature.
The contours inherent in human figures and landscapes are most prevalent in his work. He has refined his use of complimentary colors and forms to demonstrate a deeper understanding of these elements. Over the past 6 years, Chao has begun a search for the ultimate imagery by studying wood grain, human figures, and landscapes. Inspired by jazz ideology, his artwork is a delicate balance of passion, improvisation, and structure. Combining aspects of Surrealism, Abstract Expressionism, and Realism, he visually symbolizes the subconscious mind through free association. Ultimately incorporating concepts of society, sexuality, existentialism, and dreams, his art evokes schemas, which are unique to every viewer. Artists such as Umberto Boccioni, Roberto Matta, Salvador Dali, Hieronymus Bosch, and Richard Diebenkorn most notably influence Arnold. Over the course of the past few years, Arnold Chao has sold key pieces of his work to private collectors. Many were commissioned. He has had three solo exhibitions and has participated in one group show at UCSC. Recently, a private exhibition was held at his home in Santa Clara, CA. He now hopes to get an opportunity to show his latest work to a larger audience.
