Abhijit Gupta Biography: Abhijit Gupta (b.1954), an art college dropout, was a designer-entrepreneur till 1991. His first solo show 'Morphosis' was held in 1993 at the Academy of Fine Arts, Kolkata and thereafter researched and collected indigenous art while experimenting with photochemical imaging on canvas, which resulted in "Reaching Out" a show of works by six artists from Bengal in Toronto, Canada and in a second solo show "Oblique Memoirs and Other Mind games" in 2000 at CIMA Gallery, Kolkata. This was followed by various group shows which included "Shatabdi" and "Bengal-- New Ideas and Media" in 2000 curated by CIMA Gallery, "Art of Bengal - past and present 1850-2000" in 2001, jointly organized by the National Gallery of Modern Art, Mumbai and CIMA Gallery, "Brahma to Bapu-- Icons and Symbols in Indian Art" in 2002, curated by CIMA Gallery and exhibited at the India Habitat Center, New Delhi, "Vote to whom dost thou belong?" and "Transmigrations" in 2004 at CIMA Gallery, "Identity, Alienation, Amity" in 2005 at Tao Art Gallery, Mumbai, "Bahia with an H" in 2005 at Galleria do Conselho, Salvador, Brazil, "Addressing Unreason" in 2006 at Sumukha Art Gallery, Bangalore and a third solo show "Post modern bole to?!" in 2006 at Birla Academy of Art & Culture, Mumbai. Works shown in "Variable Forms-Sustained Distinctions" at Gandhara Art Gallery, Kolkata and "Synchrome 4" at Akar Prakar Gallery, Kolkata and in “Art addressing violence” curated by Mrinal Ghosh at Samokal Art Gallery, Kolkata in 2007. He is also a practicing video artist and has been shown in Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, Washington and all over India. He is a founder member of "The Eclectic Crew" since 2001. Lately he helped to organize a Khoj International Artists Workshop in Kolkata, as a member of its Core Working Group. He received the UNESCO-Aschberg Fellowship in 2005 and was an artist-in-residence in Brazil and was also awarded the Senior Fellowship of the Department of Culture, Government of India in 1997.
