Born and raised in the “Garden State” of New Jersey, Catherine Sienko studied the fine art of painting, sculpture and photography at the School for Visual Arts and Cooper Union in New York City and The Pratt Institute in the Borough of Brooklyn. She studied printmaking and sculpture with the direction of Louise Bourgeois, and photography with Todd Watts.

Catherine's work shows a developed, mature artist; with traditional imagery and techniques. With a wide variety and quantity of photos, she exhibits the range of her work and experience. Her work has been exhibited at the Leo Castelli Gallery, N.Y.C. She has been featured at galleries and museums in New Jersey, New York and Arizona.

"If I could fully describe why I photograph I suspect I would give up the medium all together.

Fortunately, things aren’t that easy. The course of my life seems to always come back to the same driving principle – a desire to live deeply engaged in the universality of life, the grand mystery that unites us all.

I strive to capture fleeting moments that resonate as metaphors for what I yearn for in my self. I was drawn to photography as the creative medium to express what I was discovering and feeling. Much of my work still revolves around analog photography. I find film to be “true” photography.

It’s becoming a lost art.

My inspiration is largely the natural world, particularly Southern Arizona’s Sonoran Desert. I value intimacy of place, landscapes where I’ve found a deep communion with subject matter that has taught me much about myself. The learning and the associated photographic images are tied to the acuteness of my receptivity, a discipline of letting go that is both elusive and sometimes frustrating. When I am out photographing, I enter into a deep conversation with the landscape. For me, the process is a “non-effort” in becoming fully present and engaged in my immediate surroundings.

For the viewer it’s a chance to stand in my shoes and see what I see."
